Merlin smiles as he glances around. Crystals surround him. He mastered control over them long ago. He can easily get them to show him what he wants. The first crystal shows him the very first time he met Arthur. How young and naive they had both been. The next crystal shows a divergence of his own past, wherein he found the courage to kiss Arthur and all that could have been for them. Hot and heavy nights and secret embraces. Another shows him his parents, dancing happily before disaster struck. But like he and Arthur, they were not to be.
