I read this quite some time ago and was very happy to come upon it again. I've not always been a fan of modern AUs, but now really enjoy them. I especially love coming of age stories. There's just something so poignant about that transition period between being a teenager and becoming an adult, and this story makes it even more so.
That Merlin and Arthur were torn apart just when they had such a deep bond, that Merlin in his youth tried to do what he felt best, that he cut off contact from Arthur and his own emotions in order to survive the horror of war. Just heartbreaking for both Merlin and Arthur. And then when he returned to 'normality' he found that Arthur was no longer the boy he left behind. Different, changed. But yet still the same.
