ART: Pop Art!Merlin
So I've been playing around with this idea for a while, ever since I traced a picture of Merlin for practice and I realised I could turn it into something. Not really sure it properly qualifies as art because of the tracing. But the final thing is inspired by Andy Warhol and the pop art movement. Actually, changed my mind and decided to make it two pieces, because Warhol did it, so why can't I?

So I started off with my lineart for this, which was traced from a photo, then I coloured it with some base tone layers, intending to shade, etc and make it look more like the original picture, and it turned out I really liked it like that and I kept it that way for a long while. But the more I thought about it the more it reminded me of pop art movement (Andy Warhol's Marilyn Munroe, in particular). So I gave it a yellow background and then thought I would just give it a different coloured background. But then I decided to give it more of a contrasting colour base, I would go back and add a scarf to the lineart. I liked the lineart so much I decided to give it a spot in the final piece as an interesting contrast of a blank image to the final images which are fully coloured. Then I experimented by adding the same colours as the orignal coloured image to the scarf lineart (making the base image for all the different coloured images, and then I coloured the scarf to see how it would all look together.

Then it was time to experiment with different colour combinations and I originally came up with the piece composed of 4 images posted above, and thought this would be the final piece. But I had a think about it and I wasn't sure if it was done yet.
I moved all the files I had relating to this into one folder at this point, because it was getting cluttered and I figured it was best to keep all the files together in one place (feel free to lol at the file names). And then as I looked at the folder it hit me, I didn't have to choose which colours worked best together, because why not use them all??

So I did.
And having written this all out, I've come to the conclusion that this is two pieces and not the progression to one final piece as I thought at first. It's more the extension of the idea beyond what I originally envisioned and so by thinking of it as two pieces, I think I am finally satisfied with it. (Although, I say that, but I am thinking of making a collage as well of the original lineart with different coloured backgrounds , that just seems to appeal to me visually as well. Oh dear, I can see what Warhol saw in the idea now!
I might have to give Arthur a try as well! Eeep.

What program are you using?

I'm using Krita for the moment. I downloaded GIMP, took one look and was so confused I closed it and haven't reopened it.
What would you recommend? I am open to trying new programmes, though I've sort of set up camp at Krita right now as that's what I am slowly starting to familiarise myself with.

I've heard and seen good things about Krita, I think it's one of the best you can get for free and it's not that different from paid programs. I've also seen great art done with MediBang, but I haven't used either personally.
I've never seen anything good done with GIMP, I thought it was developed more for photo editing?
The more you get familiar with a program the easier is to make good art no matter what is the program, so I think it's no use switching a lot if you feel fine with what you have.
I meant to ask, do you use the stabilizer? Your line looks a bit jittery...

I can't remember if I did use the stabiliser for the face or not. I think I did. But this was the first thing I did with it, I think.
I'm not sure. Either way, I don't think the stabiliser compensates a huge amount for me on the tablet. I don't seem to have the same issue with traditional media.
This was also done with the stabiliser and more recently:
And I think that's better?
I think the stylus is just going to take a bit of getting used to because it's thicker than the pens/pencils I prefer. I guess I will just have to continue practicing and hope to get there eventually. :)

Maybe it's also that the lines are very crisp with the brush/pencil you're using and it makes it more evident 🤔
Oh absolutely, practice makes perfect ;)
